DAY ONE by Hillary Moskow

It seems that everyone likes a challenge. Everyone except me. While we have been extremely busy organizing the events that will take place during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, this was the one event that made me a little queasy. 6.00 a day? 40.00 for the week? Wait, what about coffee?

Yesterday, I went to Trader Joes to start my shopping. After walking down the aisles and comparing prices, I ended up spending only $23.77. Later that day, I went to Safeway and spent my remaining $17.00 on oatmeal, bread, eggs, and a cucumber.  During the shopping period, I found myself feeling pretty confident, maybe I was a good food shopper.

My confidence was quickly killed later that day, when I went to cook my meals. I started going through the food that I had bought earlier and that’s when it dawned on me: the only thing I really got was chicken. Did I really spend the entire $40.00 without making a plan? Oops.

After this realization, I decided to leave my house and go to the library to do some studying. This is when I realized the importance of friends. I started telling my friend Lily about my experience that day, and in a moment of generosity, she offered to buy me a coffee. I quickly accepted the offer, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to afford the $2.00/day for the one item that I can’t live without. A week without coffee? I need to find some more friends..

All in all, yesterday was a series of ups and downs. UP: food shopping- man I was good at this! DOWN: oh man, all I bought was chicken. UP: free coffee! DOWN: nothing to eat.. UP: okay, I can get creative with chicken. DOWN: I forgot to think about dessert...

This should be an interesting week.
